Making Headway in Football

MANDATE: All OFA member coaches must complete Making Headway in Sport - Football, in order to coach (in practices and games) on any OFA member league or club.  The Board of Directors has unanimously passed this initiative as part of the Health and Safety Policy that is designed to protect OFA member participants.

Making Headway in Football will provide all coaches with concussion awareness training.  This online module takes only 60-90 minutes to complete and is FREE of charge.  You take the module by accessing your NCCP coach number through "The Locker" which is the online database where all NCCP information is stored.


Football: Safe Contact

MANDATE: All coaches must be Safe Contact trained before stepping on the practice field. New coaches have a 1 year grace period to complete the training. 

An integral part of Football Canada’s National Coaching Certification Program, Safe Contact teaches safe tackling and blocking techniques along with safety education and awareness. Every football player needs to be able to perform the football fundamentals taught in Safe Contact, regardless of what position they play on the field.

MANDATE: As per the mandate, all coaches, regardless of specialization must be community coach trained by 2021 if they are instructing athletes under the age of 14. All Head Coaches & 50% of the coaching staff must have it completed before the start of the 2019 season.

For the training itself, coaches must complete their education following the Community Sports Pathway.  It involves completing the Community Sport E-Learning and an eight hour Community Sport workshop which focuses on making ethical decisions, fundamental movement skills, practice planning, communication skills and more.

The training has been broken down in three stages based on the next three years.  In 2019, all heads coaches as well as 50 percent of a team’s staff must be Community Coach Trained prior to the beginning of the season.  The next year (2020), all head coaches and 75 percent of their staff are required to have the training prior to the beginning of the season.

By 2021, all coaches regardless of position on staff has to have their community sports training. The exception is any new coaches on a staff, with the exception of the head coach, has a one year grace period to complete it.
